About Fatcat Press

Our Thoughts on Authors

We believe that historically, in the publishing industry as a whole, authors have often gotten the short end of the stick. Stinky contract terms, sneaky clauses that trap unwary or inexperienced authors, cryptic royalty statements, you name it. We can't fix everyone else's problems, but we've done our best to establish Fatcat Press authors as colleagues rather than as serfs.

Unlike most paper-based houses and many electronic houses, we make our basic contract freely available, so prospective authors can look at it right up front. Also unlike paper-based publishing houses, we give authors generous contract terms: 50% of revenue, after we've paid our running costs, goes to the author. More normal terms in the paper-based industry range from 0% royalties on many kinds of books, to perhaps 15% on some best-selling works.

Our Views
on E-Books

We at Fatcat Press believe that electronic books are a valuable, useful means of publishing. We know that e-texts have a significant part to play in publishing, just like hardback books, paperbacks, magazines, newspapers, pop-up books...you get the idea. The ebook business model is just coming into its own, and we are excited to be part of it.

Giving Back

And what happens to the other 50% of the revenue, you ask? We plow part of it back. Each royalty period, we send contributions to three nonprofit organizations: one local, one inside the United States, and one outside. Our hope is to spread some of our good fortune to others close to us and far away.
