Fatcat Press typically publishes electronic books in two formats on its own website: MobiPocket files (.prc) and PDF files (.pdf). The .prc format can be read best with MobiPocket.com's Reader, and also with Palm's reader and other similar PDA readers that handle .prc format. Fatcat Press books purchased elsewhere typically are in .prc format, and occasionally in both .prc and .lit (Microsoft Reader) formats.

The book you purchase from Fatcat Press consists of a downloaded file that is in one of those formats. When you download it, you choose where to save it on your desktop, and then you can either upload it to your handheld, or if it's in .pdf format you can open it and read it on your personal computer. Some Fatcat PDFs are print-enabled, so that you can print out your book if you want to. We don't quite see why you'd want to print out an electronic text, but some readers have requested that we include this feature, so we have.

If you want to read PDFs on your desktop machine, you'll need a copy of Adobe.com's free Adobe Reader. PDFs can also be read on your handheld, either using Adobe's free Reader (download here) or other commonly available programs like Foxit (www.foxitsoftware.com, free) or iSilo (www.iSilo.com, US$19.99).

Fatcat Press ebooks (in .prc file format) are best read using one of the MobiPocket ebook readers. MobiPocket is currently the only ebook software that is open-ebook compliant. That means that ebooks in MobiPocket format can be read on PDAs that use the Palm OS (Palm, Sony, Handspring, e.g.) or the Microsoft OS (Pocket PC, Axim, etc.). They can also be read on the venerable Franklin EBookman. If you want to use MobiPocket's Professional edition, you can read ebooks on your Windows-based PC, also.

You can also read ebooks in .prc format using several of the other commonly available ebook readers.
