Acceptable Genres:

Fatcat Press accepts submissions in these areas only:

nonfiction essays on the technological world

armchair travel, especially in Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean basin, and Australia

Buddhist studies, especially the Zen and Mahayana traditions

speculative fiction or science fiction

science fictional satire and fantasy

mysteries -- murder mysteries and suspense, both, especially historical

Note: We do not accept erotica, hate literature, or horror/gothic works of any sort.

Note: We do not work with agents or with agented manuscripts.

Initial Query
Query us in advance, preferably by snail mail. Do not send us your full manuscript until we tell you to do so.. In your initial query, please tell us something about yourself and about your writing background (your published work to date, other genres in which you work, etc.), provide a brief synopsis of your submission, and add anything else you'd like us to know about you.

If you're querying by snail mail, please include a ten-page writing sample from somewhere in the middle of the work, not from the very beginning.

Include a current email address. We respond to queries via email.

To make it past our spam filters, please put the word CORMORANT in your subject line, together with your last name. We change this word from time to time, so if you store these instructions, be sure to check back.

Acceptance
We respond to submissions by email, within roughly one month of receipt (usually less). We either accept a work, or we request revisions and resubmission, or we decline it. We have a fast copyediting and production schedule so we do not allow double submissions or simultaneous submissions (that is, submissions sent to us and to another press simultaneously). Simultaneous queries, however, are ok.

If we accept your work for publication, we will send two copies of our contract to you by snail-mail, to sign and return. We will then counter-sign and return one copy to you.

Production Process
Once we have received a signed contract, we will copyedit your work. The copyedited work is returned to you for approval, and so that you can answer questions or comments about the work.

After we and you have reviewed the copyediting and have agreed on the text to be published, we will convert it to ebook format and publish it in our online store. This complete process normally takes a few months, depending on how fast authors respond to edited copy and some related paperwork, and depending on marketing and promotion.

We post new works once each month.
